Active Violence Event Response Training (AVERT)

Be Prepared. Respond Confidently. Increase Survival Chances.

What is AVERT Training?

In today’s world, active violence events can happen anywhere — in schools, workplaces, places of worship, and community centers. Being prepared to respond can make the difference between life and death.

Active Violence Event Response Training (AVERT), developed by the Health & Safety Institute (HSI), teaches everyday people how to recognize, respond, and act quickly in crisis situations. This program is designed for a general audience, making it ideal for teachers, employees, students, volunteers, and community members.

Best of all, at Community First Responder LLC, we offer this course FREE of charge to help make our community safer.

Why AVERT Training Matters

Active violence situations often unfold in seconds, leaving little time to think. The goal of AVERT training is to give participants the knowledge, confidence, and hands-on practice they need to react quickly.

Through a mix of cognitive learning and interactive participation, students learn how to:

  • Recognize warning signs of violence
  • React under pressure
  • Make fast decisions that improve survival chances
  • Move to safety and assist others when possible

This program helps create a more prepared and resilient community.

Course Format – Blended Learning

AVERT is a blended learning program, meaning it combines:

  • Online Learning (Prerequisite):
Students complete the online portion first, covering cognitive information and preparedness strategies.

  • In-Person Training:
Instructor-led classroom training with hands-on activities, scenario participation, and group discussions.

  • The combination ensures students understand both the theory and the practical skills needed to respond in a real event.

What’s Included in AVERT Training?

Participants will learn how to:

  • Recognize the signs of potential violence
  • Respond immediately to improve survival chances
  • React in ways that protect themselves and others
  • Provide simple life-saving interventions when safe to do so
  • Stay calm and follow emergency protocols

This course involves
interactive participation, giving students a chance to practice responses in controlled scenarios.
